Applique - Final

Selecting the threads and stitching fun! At this point all the pieces are pressed and fused to the background, and the stabiliser is fused to the back.

There are so many different options; threads that match, threads that stand out, threads that match the background fabric only, embroidery threads, standard threads, invisible thread, etc.

I like to choose threads that match as closely as possible to the fabric. Unless it's a big project with lots of applique, I tend to try to use threads I already have as you generally don't end up using very much.

Here is my selection of threads:

I've used mostly Aurifil and a few Sew Easy quilting threads, they have a lovely shine. Take everything to your sewing machine and have some happy time....you could also hand stitch of course.

What stitch? Blanket stitch is my favourite for applique, it captures the raw edge and secures it really well. I chose stitch size 1.5 width and 1.5 length. Lots of options here too, play with some stitches and also the stitch sizes on a piece of scrap fabric and see what you like. Zig zag is a good one, I've even seen applique that is free motion stitched in straight stitch around the edges.

Where to start? Pick a spot, starting in the centre of a large piece like this is a good idea, but I thought the smaller pieces would end up coming off. They tend to be annoying for me so I got them out of the way first.

Yellow thread loaded, some favourite music on and stitch stitch stitch...

One done, now to do all the other yellow bits that match this thread.

I then change to the next thread colour and continue in the same method until they are all done - about 60-odd pieces later. But it goes surprisingly quickly, I found I came to the end and wanted to do more!

All done!

I toyed with embellishing with some embroidery, but I found I quite like the stylised look with these fabrics.

It was going to be a wall hanging, but I'm going to sit on this for a bit. I'm quite liking the idea of it being a centre panel in a quilt...decisions decisions...

So, that's it - applique done. Thanks for joining me! Tina x
