Applique - Part 3

This part of the applique process is really enjoyable, I love playing with colour. I chose to go with solids on a black background for this project. Although I would really love to see this on a white background too using prints...endless choices.

Step 1. Grab your first piece of fabric and press it to get out any wrinkles or folds. Cut out all the pieces that relate to that colour, still leaving a small border around each piece. Eg all the leaves that will be dark green, flowers for coral fabric, etc.

Step 2. Place the fabric right side down on the ironing board or pressing mat. For these quality solids I can use either side, but just be mindful that you don't want glue on the front / right side.

Step 3. Place the paper pieces right side up (or paper side up) on top of the fabric. I have a silicon pressing sheet for this step, it's ideal as it's non-stick, but I have also used a clean tea towel or piece of linen. Take the pressing sheet and place on top of both the fabric and applique paper. Press (don't 'iron' - use a lift up and press down motion with the iron), and use the no steam setting on your iron.

Check that the glue has fused well to the fabric. You can also press on the other side (the fabric side) to make sure it's fused well.

Repeat Steps 1-3 for all the pieces. You'll end up with lots more cutting out to do, what fun! Cup of tea, good tv show...what's not to love?

Step 4. Cut out each piece on the line this time. For large projects you might want to label some little baggies for the pieces and keep them sorted.

That's it - here is my first go at the colours.

I wasn't really happy with so much green, so swapped out a couple of colours. I love how popping some red in there has made such a difference!

Next time I'll share the placement on the background, which will make it ready for some stitchin'! Thanks for joining me.
